Don't Hold Back the WHY

What we forget as parents...

Don’t hold back the WHY.

Too often we parents focus on the “what.”
The, “what” our kids are supposed to be doing.

Don’t take that toy!

All parents have experienced the pleasure of our kid stealing another kid’s toy.

My go-to for a long time has been:
“Who had the toy first?”
Then promptly give the toy to the kid who had it first.

That gives justice, but it only hits on the “what” and not the “why.”

If two kids argue over a toy, they are both being selfish.
They are caring about themselves more than the other.

Dealing with a selfish heart in the moment is tough.
But it changes how we respond.

Jesus focused on the “why” and not the “what.”

Back then, there were a group of people called Pharisees.
They were a Jewish group who focused on strict adherence to the Jewish traditions and laws.

No one followed all the detailed rules more than them, and they were viewed as highly spiritual people.

Jesus shocked everyone by calling them “whitewashed tombs.”
They did all the right stuff on the outside but were sinful on the inside.

Focusing on the “what” helps shape the outside.
Focusing on the “why” helps shape the inside.

Off topic reminder - Don’t be afraid to step up and lead. God put you in the place you are in for a reason.

God Bless,
Matt Virgin
