How to motivate others

Happy Monday all!! I hope you had a great weekend and are ready to tackle the week.

Please feel free to reply to this email with any comments on this article or others. I’d love to hear from you! If you have any requests on topics I’d be all ears.

How do you motivate someone to change? My wife Morgan demonstrated it perfectly last night.

My day was not the best… I was short with the kids, raised my voice when I shouldn’t have, and was feeling lazy once we got the kids in bed.

No workout or reading had happened that day because I chose to sleep in instead of getting up early. The day was a flop.

Morgan knew I was off and knew working out is the best thing for me when I’m in that kind of mood. She could have reciprocated my impatience and told me to go workout. Instead, she asked the perfect question.

“What would be the best thing for you to do?”

She didn’t ask what I wanted to do or tell me what to do. Her question made me admit what I felt like doing was not what would be best.

I tried to fight it. I told her I don’t have it in me to workout. She just smiled, said “yes you do,” and walked away. As she walked away, she told me to “make the next right decision.” The phrase I have used several times in my writing.

I went and did the best thing for me feeling encouraged, challenged, and even more in love with my wife.

If you want to motivate change, ask the right question. Lead the person to give the right answer rather than give it to them.

Thank you for reading! Have a great day and remember to take things one decision at a time!
